Treasure by Rebekah Weatherspoon
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Content warnings: sex, lesbian relationship, mentions of suicide attempt, alcohol use, alcohol mentions

This is such a fantastic book! I fell in love with the characters early on. A very smart stripper (she gets A’s on her tests in a computer science class for criminy sakes) and a girl with mental illnesses living in a “perfect” household.

Neither girl feels like a caricature of themselves. The girl with mental illness seems to have anxiety and depression. And the illnesses aren’t caricaturized nor are they overpowering in the narrative. They feel like how my anxiety and depression work with how they’re written.

The characters feel so multi dimensional that I was genuinely shocked I couldn’t reach out and touch them. And I enjoyed the parents of the girl with mental illness and how they reacted to both meeting their daughter’s girlfriend and dealing with their daughter being a lesbian. The mother not fully understanding but trying to be as supportive as possible and the father being kind of a jerk but also wanting his daughter happy. While I’m not exactly happy about how the father acted it still felt like a very real and accurate portrayal of a person.

This was a fantastic book that I would definitely recommend to others to read. And probably one of my most favourite books I’ve read this year.
