I guess I wasn’t fully paying attention when I first got this book and didn’t realise that it was more than one story. Which is a nice surprise but unexpected.
Gingerbread Cookie Murder by Joanne Fluke
Content warnings: death, mentions of attempted violence/murder, alcohol use
Short novella that was more of the same crap that you get with every single book of hers. “I’m going to totally investigate this murder and stick my nose into places it doesn’t belong even though I know I shouldn’t and oh! I have to choose between these two guys”. blah blah blah rinse lather repeat. Some decent recipes though. And her mother making terrible decisions in men. Again.
The Dangers Of Gingerbread Cookies by Laura Levine
Content warnings: mentions of death, mentions of wanting to do violence against another person, mentions of medicall malpractice
Another short novella. The main character was slightly interesting. Minus the bitching about her mother. Like do you not have a backbone and can you not stand up for yourself and say “hey mum I don’t like the things you keep buying me that you think I’ll like please stop buying these things”. But again, woman putting her nose in places she shouldn’t and *miraculously* solving the case.
Gingerbread Cookies And Gunshots by Leslie Meier
Content warnings: mentions of drugs, mentions of alchol, death, mentions of violence, kidnapping
Where do I start with this mess? First we have the wife who is a reporter and by default a nosy person who has to know things. On top of that she feels entitled to her kids time at Christmas regardless of their plans (and in one case their families). Like I get it. Holidays should be spent with family. But…..getting mad because your son, who is married, is being taken on a vacation by his wife’s parents at their request for the holiday instead of spending time with you is unreasonable. Getting mad that your daughter who is trying to get a promotion at her job and has taken the opportunity to get holiday overtime pay when everyone else is taking off decides to work instead of coming home (but says she’ll be home the next week and they can do holiday then) is unreasonable. Especially when you lament constantly about how the economy is failing especially in your local area. Oh and ninjas. Don’t forget ninjas.
Seriously. How much more entitled feeling can you get to want the monopoly on your children’s time like that? Your ADULT children’s time at that. I was so glad to finish this story.
