I received a free ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Oh my gosh! I LOVED THIS BOOK! And I also hated it. At least, I hated the ending because it’s a cliffhanger and it’s at least a year until the next book comes out.

First off, the cover. It’s gorgeous as hell. I sincerely hope that the next two books have beautiful covers as well.

This book parallels Song of Blood & Stone. Which is a good thing. We get introduced to Darvyn and Kyara. The poison flame and the shadowfox. Similar goals but different ways of how they will achieve them.

The world building continues from the first book into this book, making the world more expansive. Jacq and Jasminda are mentioned in this book. So they’re not completely forgotten. Which is good.

We get more detail about The All Father’s court and hierarchies in it as well as seeing more of Lagrimar and getting more explanation as to what the people are currently facing. And begin to understand the desperation they felt for the need to escape.

I loved the scene at the school especially when Kyara is getting her hair braided. It was touching.

This book was an incredible read that completely swept me away. It was another I wanted to finish but I didn’t want to finish because I didn’t want it to end. But end it did and it ended on a cliffhanger.

One of the important things I want to mention is that the main character is a black woman. Not only that, she’s not a virgin but she’s also not portrayed as hyper sexual like society likes to paint WOC. She doesn’t exactly own her sexuality the whole book, but once she finds her sexuality she very much owns it. And yeah it takes a man to help her do so but that’s not the main point of this book. It’s more a mere mention. Not only that she is in danger and a danger to the aforementioned man and winds up saving herself. Firstly by wanting to and secondly by learning more about what she is and having the help and support of said man. He doesn’t overshadow her but he definitely does support her. Even if he doesn’t like what’s happening.

If you haven’t read the first book, I very much advise you to GO READ THE BOOK. And then read this one. Because she’s a FANTASTIC author who does amazing world building.
