Ash by Malinda Lo

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Content warnings: lesbian relationships, magic, cruelty by family

So, Malinda Lo has been recommended over and over to me. And I totally understand why now. This definitely hits two of my favourite things. 1) Re-tellings of fairy tales. 2) REALLY GOOD representation.

Ash is a Cinderella re-telling. That actually starts with both her mother and father alive. And then slowly turns into a similar Cinderella story to what people are more familiar with. And then takes a turn. In order not to spoil this, let’s just say that the fairy godmother doesn’t exist. But faeries DO.

I absolutely LOVE that the king’s huntress is *ALWAYS* female as that tends to be a role that in fantasy books especially tends to be exclusively male. It was a great role reversal and such a natural one that it sometimes surprises me that it isn’t utilized more.

This is a fantastic book that I highly recommend to any and all. Definitely a book that was needed.
